How this works
- Map: the colours are NOAA's aurora forecast model (called OVATION). It shows the chance of seeing aurora.
- Real or estimate: NOAA's map only covers about the next half hour. For other times the badge says "Kp estimate" and the map is the latest one moved to suit the Kp index and time of day.
- Past: times this site has saved show the real map; earlier ones are estimates.
- Time: it plays the last 3 days up to the forecast in 15 minute steps. "Live" keeps just 90 minutes either side of now.
- Night: the shaded side of the globe is in darkness.
- Updates: the page refreshes itself every 5 minutes.
